Quotations
By Linus Pauling
- On presentation of the Nobel Prize, 10 Dec 1954:
"Perhaps as one of the older generation, I should preach a little sermon to you,
but I do not propose to do so. I shall, instead give you a word of advice about
how to behave toward your elders. When an old and distinguished person speaks
to you, listen to him carefully and with respect —
but do not believe him. Never put your trust in anything but your own
intellect. Your elder, no matter whether he has gray hair or has lost his
hair, no matter whether he is a Nobel Laureate, may be wrong. The
world progresses, year by year, century by century, as the members of the
younger generation find out what was wrong among the things that their
elders said. So you must always be skeptical —
always think for yourself."
- "I liked mathematics because you could be perfect ..."
- David Harker: "Dr. Pauling, how do you have so many good ideas?"
Linus Pauling: "Well, David, I have a lot of ideas and throw away the bad ones."
- "You must always search for truth. Truth does not depend upon the point of view.
If your neighbor does not see things as you do, then you must search for the
truth. If a statement is made in one country but not another, then you must
search for the truth."
- "We are not the flower of civilization. We are but the immature bud of a
civilization yet to come. We are the children of the dawn, witnessing the
approach of day. We bask in the dim prophecies of the rising sun, knowing,
even in our inexperience, that something glorious is to come; for it is from
us that greater beings will grow, to develop in the light of the sun that
shall know no setting."
About Linus Pauling
- Warren Weaver, Rockefeller Foundation, 1932:
"[Pauling] has a speculative mind of the first order, great analytical
ability, and the genius to keep in close and inspiring touch with experimental
work ... [He] is nearly universally rated as the leading theoretical chemist
of the world."
- Linus Pauling, Jr., 1993:
"As my father's son I am certainly among his fondest admirers. Now I have
ample evidence that all over the nation, and elsewhere in the world, innumerable
people share my affection and admiration in their own ways. They not only admire
but love him.... They feel a personal connection, a strong bond, with
his values — his valiant anti-nuclear-testing
stance, his dedication to world peace, his emphasis on vitamin C as a valuable
nutrient for both prevention and treatment of disease, his compassion for the
human condition of suffering. For a number of our supporters, Linus Pauling
may be the closest embodiment, in this age of uncertainty, amorality, and
constant conflict, of a living universal hero."
