This page is intended to point our customers to information that might be useful to them. We may or may not agree with what's on other people's sites, and do not necessarily vouch for them. It's unlikely that we'd agree with everyone. Hard to see how we could, given the variety of perspectives linked to. For instance, the Iraqi UN mission probably sees things differently than Amnesty International....

Over time, we will add substantially to this page. As usual, you're encouraged to send us any suggestions or comments.

Books

Whatever else you do to prepare your family, get these two books. They are old but still very useful.

True Odds book cover

Between hidden agendas and media hype, it's hard to know what the truth is about the many risks in life, from radon to AIDS. There was an insightful study some years ago that showed that there's little relationship between how risky something actually is and how risky people think it is.

James Walsh's True Odds: How Risk Affects Your Everyday Life is a good place to start.

Lucifer's Hammer book cover

Read Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle's Lucifer's Hammer. It's a classic blockbuster novel about the consequences of a comet striking the Earth. Everyone we know who's read it has asked themself a life-altering question: "If I were at the Senator's gate, would they let me in?"

What about guns?

The role of guns in American society is obviously controversial. But most everyone will agree that anyone who does own or carry a gun, for whatever reason, should be competent, safe, and prudent.

Second Amendment Sisters and National Rifle Association certified instructors teach basic gun safety, care, and marksmanship. Their classes are offered nationwide, often, and are fairly inexpensive.

Front Sight Firearms Training InstituteGunsiteLethal Force Institute, and SIGARMS Academy teach advanced skills, bringing the student to a level of practical shooting equivalent to (or beyond) FBI and sky marshal requirements. They may, like Lethal Force Institute, also thoroughly cover the legal standards that must be met by a civilian or a law enforcement officer who uses a weapon. They are much more expensive, and usually require travelling to their facility.

By the way, Front Sight is offering free gun training for all airline pilots.

If you want more choices, see here. Some states require training from an instructor who has been approved by that state before issuing a gun permit.

Which brings us to a related matter that, again, should be pretty obvious. Anyone who does own or carry a gun should know what the law is, whether they happen to agree with it or not. There are an estimated 50,000 gun laws in the United States. Here are a couple good sites that cover federal, state and local gun laws:

If you know of quality firearms instruction outside the United States or sites that cover gun laws elsewhere, tell us, and we'll consider adding links to them.
