This section of the web site is intended to give you a sense of the capabilities of Fallout Shelter, and how you can use them to enhance your family's safety. Product features are subject to change; consult the help system provided with Fallout Shelter for the most accurate information.

Since our customers vary widely in how much they already know about nuclear weapons and how technical they want to get, these pages may either tell you more or less than you want to know. If you have unanswered questions, or suggestions for improving the guided tour, email us.

"One of the lessons of 9/11 is that we have to prepare for the worst case."

Newt Gingrich, Mar 30 2002

Judith Regan Tonight

"It is appropriate to emphasize once more that we are staunch advocates of a vigorous civil defense program. Such support, however, does not constititute an endorsement of nuclear war as a rational act any more than buying life insurance means that we are in favor of death."

Thomas L. Martin, Jr. and Donald C. Latham, 1963

Built-in targets

The first release of Fallout Shelter ships with a starter set of potential targets — the centers of fifty major cities. We're working on a comprehensive database of thousands of targets, which will be available later in the spring.

Adding targets in a hurry

The built-in targets are mostly meant to save you time in poking around Fallout Shelter when you first download it. For actual planning purposes, you will need to define additional targets yourself.

From the targets list, tap on the New button. Most attributes are pre-set to sensible values. The only ones you must set are longitude and latitude.

You could also start with an existing target, in either the targets list or the target editor, duplicate it with Record | Duplicate Target, and then change the copy.

Adding targets methodically

TARGET NAME

Target names are optional, and can be up to 23 letters long.

TARGET CATEGORY

As in the built-in Palm OS applications, you can define up to 15 categories for targets. Half a dozen are already defined; you can keep, remove, or change them. Besides the standard Unfiled, we've defined Population center, Military base, Oil refinery, Power plant, and Capital.

LONGITUDE AND LATITUDE

There are two ways longitude and latitude are written: in the traditional format of 42°46'54" N, or degrees plus fraction, like 71.514° W.

To switch between formats, tap on the down arrow near the latitude label. To switch hemispheres, tap on the hemisphere letter.

If you don't know the target's longitude and latitude, you can usually obtain it through the Internet. If you have a GPS receiver (stand-alone or attached), it can provide you with longitude, latitude, and altitude for your present location.

We are also working on ways to simplify this process, such as letting you enter a zip code instead.

ALTITUDE

Most weapon effects depend on the direct line-of-sight distance from the target to your location, not on the ground distance. The altitude of a target also determines atmospheric properties that affect the transmission of some effects.

If you don't know the target's altitude, you can usually obtain it through the Internet. If you have a GPS receiver (stand-alone or attached), it can provide you with longitude, latitude, and altitude for your present location.

When a new target is created in Fallout Shelter, it is initially presumed to be at sea level.

GROUND

The composition of the ground where the target is affects how large a crater is formed by a surface burst. In keeping with our policy of conservatively reporting effects, a new target is initially presumed to be over soil, which produces the greatest cratering.

NOTES

If you want to capture additional information about a target, you can add a text memo up to 4096 letters long. If you need more space, let us know.
