This section of the web site is intended to give you a sense of the capabilities of Fallout Shelter, and how you can use them to enhance your family's safety. It is not meant to replace product documentation.

Since our customers vary widely in how much they already know about nuclear weapons and how technical they want to get, these pages may tell either tell you more or less than you want to know. If you have unanswered questions, or suggestions for improving the guided tour, email us.

Screen shots will be added as our release date approaches.

"The issue is not whether the American people should or should not protect themselves against possible disaster. Of course they should. The issue is whether the American people are entitled to full, honest, information about the nature of the anticipated disaster and the problems involved in adequate preparation."

Built-in locations

A location is somewhere that you are, experiencing weapon effects, versus where the target is. No locations are built-in.

Adding locations in a hurry

At the very least, you'll want to define locations for home and work.

From the locations list, tap on the New button. Most attributes are pre-set to sensible values. The only ones you must set are longitude and latitude.

You could also start with an existing location, in either the locations list or the location editor, duplicate it with Record | Duplicate Location, and then change the copy.

Adding locations methodically

LOCATION NAME

Location names are optional, and can be up to 23 letters long.

LOCATION CATEGORY

As in the built-in Palm OS applications, you can define up to 15 categories for locations. By default, all locations are Unfiled.

LONGITUDE AND LATITUDE

There are two ways longitude and latitude are written: in the traditional format of 42°46'54" N, or degrees plus fraction, like 71.514° W.

To switch between formats, tap on the down arrow near the latitude label. To switch hemispheres, tap on the hemisphere letter.

If you don't know the location's longitude and latitude, you can usually obtain it through the Internet. If you have a GPS receiver (stand-alone or attached), it can provide you with longitude, latitude, and altitude for your present location.

We are also working on ways to simplify this process, such as letting you enter a zip code instead.

ALTITUDE

Most weapon effects depend on the direct line-of-sight distance from the target to your location, not on the ground distance. The altitude also determines atmospheric properties that affect the transmission of some effects.

If you don't know the location's altitude, you can usually obtain it through the Internet. If you have a GPS receiver, (stand-alone or attached), it can provide you with longitude, latitude, and altitude for your present location.

When a new location is created in Fallout Shelter, it is initially presumed to be at sea level.

TERRAIN

A location can be flat, average, or hilly ground or water. The rougher the terrain, the more it will shield you from nuclear effects, especially fallout. The default terrain is average.

NOTES

If you want to capture additional information about a location, you can add a text memo you can add a text memo up to 4096 letters long. If you need more space, let us know.
